Specialists in the restoration and conservation of fine art
paintings and frames.
CONSERVE OR RESTORE?
A frame can enhance a painting of the same period or it can be a
work of art in itself.
If you have a first-rate period frame in original condition signed
by the artist or by a top manufacturer that has some condition
problems, you should conserve it but not restore it. Restoration on
this type of frame will diminish its value.
Conservation on any art object is beneficial to the object. The same
cannot be said for major restoration.
For the other ninety odd percent of picture frames that need
attention, though, restoration is desirable.
Most of these frames are not of high monetary value, but can and should be
aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
To be described as a period piece, the period frame matched to the
period work of art or mirror should remain together as it was
originally designed.
If you're not certain which course is more
appropriate for your specific piece, rest assured that we'll advise
you.
We have over thirty years experience in the
restoration and conservation of museum quality artwork and frames.
